POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

Finding and checking out books are important life skills and requires practice!  All students are encouraged to check out at least 1 book each time they come to library class.

Discovery employs a "take what you need" policy regarding book checkout for students in grades 3-5. Students may take as many books as they feel they need or can remember to return each week. While students are strongly encouraged to bring their books back each week, they will still have access to checkout even if they have overdue books.

  • Kindergarten - 2 books (beginning with 1 book in Sept/Oct)

  • 1st grade - 3 books

  • 2nd grade - 4 books

  • 3rd - 5th grades - take what you need! (up to 10 books)

Books may be returned on any day, up to and including their library day. Students do not have to wait until their library day to return a book to the library!

LOST/DAMAGED BOOK POLICY

  • Teaching the importance of book care and how books can be damaged is vital to the library program.

  • Please help your child find a safe place to store their library books at home away from younger siblings, pets, food, outside play areas, etc.

Life Happens!

  • If a book is lost or damaged and you're looking to replace it, there are three options.  You may either buy the exact book and give it to the library, or you can buy a book from our wish list, or pay to have the book replaced.  Please contact me to let me know what you would like to do.  If you are going to pay, our secretary will need to set up a fine on Pay Online for you, so you can pay with a credit card.  Thank you so much!

  • At the end of the school year, students who do not return or pay for lost books, may have a fine attached to their school record. This fine will be deleted once paid.

OVERDUE BOOK POLICY

Again...life happens and there are no fines and this is a no-tears-necessary space!

  • Students are reminded what they have checked out each time they come to class.

  • If a student has reached their grade-level checkout limit and/or all books checked out are overdue, they may not be able to check out more books until the others are returned, but will still have plenty of opportunity to browse and read books.

  • We do not charge fines for overdue books.

  • Students who lose or damage a book may either pay for it, replace the exact same book, or purchase a book from our wish list. Please email me and we can work out the best option for your family.

  • At the end of the school year, students who do not return or pay for lost books, may have a fine attached to their school record. This fine will be deleted once paid.
